Glass and neon
24”x30”x4”
Gestural black masses result from an experimental casting process by which glass is cast over dried wood embedding a textural relief. The flatness of the casting is disrupted through articulation of the burning elements further activating the mass. The folding, stretching and movement conveyed in each subject hint at its formation, however, much of the recorded mark-making present is concealed by an opaque, obsidian surface calling to a fluidity, reflecting light in one instance to absorb it in another. I view these masses as voids or portals, that through gestural activation complicates the viewer/subject relationship. The vastness of this void presents itself as ominous, unknown, but what potential might reside in that unknown? The resulting castings from this intuitive process are interpreted through a line drawing sculpted in space that is translated into neon. The luminance of neon amplifies the mysteriousness of these masses by channeling our sight to a definitive line, making its own inquiry into the subjects. Through this continuous path, relationality between the two black fields is solidified, drawing attention to the absence of mass on the wall. I see the above as a material study as I look to build out a constellation of castings as nodes bridged by synapses of neon.
